I want a sword...

It's a pretty fantasy writerly thing to want, ya?

I've thought about it for years, but only now that I had a job do I actually have the means to purchase such a thing. And now that I do I don't think I should actually buy a sword. But I really want a sword.

But whhhhhyyy?

Because all I want is to be a fantasy hero. I don't read just because I love the act of reading. I love the adventure and the story and the magic. Don't we all?

I'd love nothing more than to live in a cottage in an enchanted forest, or be a pirate sailing the seas avoiding sea monsters and ships of the undead. Be a princess fighting for their kingdom or a sorcerer living on the fringed of society... Any of it would be better than this? Ya?

One could argue that those worlds are dangerous, our lives would be cut short by the hardships of a fantasy world. The dangers. But ah, so many of us would give up everything in our lives for a touch of the magical.

So. Why do I want a sword?

I don't. I want what it represents. I want one because what I really want to know how to sword fight and live in a world where that will come in use. A world where I'll just on a horse and ride across the country on an epic adventure to find a lost relic or magical item or save the world. A world where were free. I just want to hang up on the ropes of a ship, the wind in my hair. The ache in my bones of a hard days of riding, settling down by a fire and sharing a drink and stories and laying down under the stars, one hand on the hilt of a sword.

It seems cruel that we live in a world so ordinary, with the imagination to come up with such beautiful, fantastical worlds. It seems cruel were doomed to only ever be able to reach magic in our dreams and in-between the pages of books. It seems cruel that I want a sword, but it will only ever be a display piece that I'll take out into the woods every now and then and swing around. It will never be used to fight dragons. It will never meet another blade.

I still want it though.
